Zilaiskalns Civil Parish

The parish was formed in late 1950ies, when the exploration of Zilaiskalns peat deposits was begun. Residential buildings for the workers of peat factory "Zilaiskalns", a school and a hospital were built at that time. Apartment buildings were built mainly from 1960ies to 1980ies.

Instead of the former peat processing plant now there is a wood processing workshop ''Silviko Ltd.". There is also an enterprise "Zilakalna kudra" and a local municipality company "Zilaiskalns - 127" providing public utility services for the local residents.

The river Briede, which is included in Northvidzeme nature reservation area, flows into the Burtnieki lake. The nearby marsh is inhabited by a very rare protected animal species - a marsh tortoise.

There is a branch of Dikli elementary school (primary classes 1 - 2), a culture centre where different activities are organized, a medical service, a pharmacy, a library, a post-office, and shops. "Zazeni" is a sports horses breeding farm.
Marta who was famous and legendary as a healer in Latvia has lived in ''Zazeni". People say that her healing power has come from Zilaiskalns (the hill).
